PK Three
The curriculum for 3-year-olds builds on the previous year to match their advancing developmental milestones. The skills targeted become more complex and structured as children grow older. As always, the curriculum should continue to be flexible and respond to each child's individual needs and interests. Three-year-olds are naturally curious and eager to learn, and the curriculum should foster this love of learning.
An Exceptional Student-Teacher Ratio
The student-teacher ratio for our PK Three program is 7:1. In Texas, the average for this age group is 15:1. We’re able to keep our ratio so low because 1) class sizes are small at 10 students, and 2) we have a team of staff supporting our lead teachers.
Communication
Story-telling and language skills will be encouraged even more. Children will be expected to communicate more clearly, using longer sentences. More complex books might be introduced, and children could be asked to retell stories in their own words or predict what might happen next.
Experiential Learning
The activities would become more complex. Children might start working on more involved projects over multiple days, which could also incorporate the concept of planning and execution. They may also begin early science experiments and exploration of their natural environment.
Social-Emotional Learning
Socialization becomes more important as children start engaging with peers and developing strong friendships. They continue to work on understanding and demonstrating empathy. Children begin developing a deeper understanding of their emotions and an increased ability to manage their feelings. They start showing more independence. Discussions centered around concepts like fairness and kindness are common.
Motor Skills
Children should be encouraged to do more complex physical activities, like skipping, hopping on one foot, or climbing. Fine motor skills development would include more complex crafts and potentially even writing, drawing, and cutting with safety scissors.
Problem Solving
Puzzles and games would become more complex, requiring more advanced critical thinking. Children would be encouraged to solve more complex problems, both academically and socially, with less adult intervention.
